Get to Know Dia Carabajal

 

Education

A graduate of Syracuse University (M.S., B.S.) Dia Carabajal has dedicated her life to education and the betterment of her community. Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico of Mexican-American descent her family moved back to Auburn, NY when she was an infant. She is the seventh generation of her family to live and work in Cayuga County. Dia and her husband, Lee live in Auburn, NY. They have one child, Matthias who is a sophomore at Syracuse University.

Professional Career

A life-long educator, Dia began her career as a Secondary Mathematics Teacher for Auburn Enlarged City School District in 1985. In 2002 she joined the faculty at Cayuga Community College; since 2015 she has been a full Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science for both the Auburn and Fulton Campuses. In addition she has worked as an educator in the Syracuse City School District, Syracuse University, SUNY Empire State College and Wells College. Carabajal has experience in the private sector as a network engineer, IP analyst, technical consultant, new product development, system administrator and product analyst for companies including: MacKenzie-Childs. Ltd., Telergy, Applied Theory Corporation, and Auburn Cablevision lnc./Relex.

Community Leadership

Carabajal is a leader with values that translate across party lines. Carabajal's personal commitment to her community did not begin with elected office. Her involvement in numerous civic and cultural organizations spans decades and includes board positions with area non-profits. In November of 2015 Carabajal was elected to The City of Auburn City Council. For four years as a City Councilor she was instrumental in the economic and cultural growth of the City of Auburn. Prior to her time as an Auburn City Councilor, Carabajal served two consecutive terms (2010-2016) on the Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education. She currently serves on the executive committee for the Cayuga Community College Faculty Association, which is a NYSUT affiliate. She is also a Kauffman Grant Recipient for her work on an Arts and Cultural District Research Project with Cayuga Community College.

Community Service
